Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use the extension?

Visit any web page with video or audio content and click the WVD icon in your Chrome toolbar. The extension automatically detects media files as they load. You'll see a list of detected files — click the download button next to any file to save it, or click the play button to preview it first.

Why can't I download videos from YouTube?

YouTube and some other major platforms use DRM (Digital Rights Management) and their terms of service prohibit downloading content. WVD respects these restrictions and does not support downloading from such platforms. This is by design to comply with copyright policies.

What is HLS/M3U8 and how does it work?

HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) is a streaming protocol that breaks video into small segments described by an M3U8 playlist file. Many streaming sites use this format. WVD can detect HLS streams, parse the playlist, and download all segments. If multiple quality levels are available, you can choose your preferred quality before downloading.

The extension is not detecting any media files. What should I do?

First, make sure the page has actually loaded media content (look for playing videos or audio). Some sites load media dynamically — try playing the video first. Also check if the domain is in your blocked list (Settings > Blocked Domains). If the issue persists, try refreshing the page or restarting Chrome.

Does this extension collect my personal data?

No. Web VideoDownloader processes everything locally in your browser. It does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information, browsing history, or download activity to any external server. There are no accounts, no analytics, and no tracking of any kind. Read our full Privacy Policy for details.

Why does the extension need access to all websites?

The extension needs broad host permissions because media files can be hosted on any domain. To detect videos and audio as they load, the extension monitors network response headers across all websites. This access is read-only — it only observes HTTP headers to identify media content types and never accesses page content, form data, or personal information.

My download failed or is stuck. How can I fix it?

Download failures can occur due to expired URLs, network interruptions, or server restrictions. Try refreshing the source page and re-detecting the media file. For HLS streams, ensure you have a stable internet connection as the extension needs to download multiple segments. If the problem persists, the source server may be blocking direct downloads.
